Good Denver Dollar Tacos: Odelay Tacos
I love street tacos. Fortunately in Denver we have tons of Good places to get them, each with a slightly different style and price.
One of my favorite places to get tacos is Odelay Tacos–especially on Taco Tuesdays. Odelay Tacos is located within the bar 3014 (at 3014 E. Colfax), similar to how Fat Sully’s is located within the Atomic Cowboy. Every Tuesday, the regularly $2 tacos at Odelay come two-for-one, so when you’re ordering about 10 tacos like I do (don’t judge me–they’re Good), your bill is only $10 bucks as opposed to $20. That’s a Good Deal.
It’s one thing to offer a Good deal on tacos, but it’s another for them to actually be Good. These are very Good. The tacos come in five varieties: Carne Asada (marinated, seasoned, and grilled beef), Pollo (marinated and grilled chicken), Carnitas (slow cooked shredded pork with pineapple), Camarones (pan-fried shrimp with a signature sauce), and Tempeh (usually I would be skeptical that a tempeh taco could be Good, but this one paired with avacado, onions, and cilantro exceeds expectations). My three favorites are the Camarones, the Carnitas, and the Carne Asada, but when I go I usually just order two of everything.
While you’re waiting for your tacos, be sure to order the chips and pico de gallo or chips and guacamole. The “chips” are fresh flour tortillas that have been cut into triangles and deep fried. They are extremely Good and probably a heart attack waiting to happen. The pico is house made, and it is also very Good, though I wish the quantity served was a bit bigger.
The margaritas are Good and are only $3 from 3-6pm, but I prefer to order a michelada (beer with hot sauce, muttled lime, and salt around the rim) which, though it isn’t on the menu, the bartenders seem to know how to make quite well.
Odelay has patio seating, which though it is on Colfax, is still pretty relaxing. They also have a rooftop patio, but it is currently only open Wednesdays-Sundays. Getting a table has never been a problem for us during happy hour time, though I suspect that that the only one year-old taco joint is going to get more and more popular and that it will start to get significantly more crowded. Hopefully at that point they’ll open up the rooftop on Tuesdays!
Enjoy your dollar tacos, and let me know what you think!
