Good Denver Happy Hour: Panzano

“Wow.”  That’s what I couldn’t stop saying that each time I tried out a different menu item from the happy hour menu at PanzanoI recently met up with a colleague of mine for a happy hour there, and, needless to say, I was very impressed.  I’ve intentionally shied away from Panzano in the past because the menu prices seemed a bit steep, but now I’m regretting that decision–especially when it comes to the Panzano happy hour.

Happy hour is the perfect way to get a “taste” of Panzano.  The happy hour drink deals are Good.  For $3 you can get Good Colorado draughts such as Avery’s White Rascal, Odell’s Levity, and Oskar Blues’ Mama’s Little Yella Pils; for $4 you can get Good wine by the glass; and for $5, you can get specialty cocktails (normally $12) such as “A Perfect Pair” (Grey Goose La Poire, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, house-made pear simple syrup and a squeeze of lemon) or the “Italian Rickey” (Tanqueray Gin, fresh squeezed lime juice and simple syrup finished with prosecco).

Though the drinks at Panzano are Good, what really stands out about the restaurant is its food.  The happy hour menu consists of a substantial selection of $4, $5, and $6 plates, many of which are smaller versions of menu items from the main restaurant.  We started with the Salsiccia Pizza (Italian sausage, Il Mondo Vecchio pepperoni, provolone, fontina, pomodoro), which was small, but fantastic.  We then moved on to the Pastiche (baked pasta layered with spicy meatballs, cheese tortellini and ragu topped with cinnamon custard and a savory thyme crust).  It was dynamite!  The Piadina con Crescenza (flatbread, Crescenza cheese, prosciutto, white truffle oil, and balsamic reduction) was delicious, and the rich Gnocchi al Coniglio (sautéed gnocchi with rabbit confit, leeks, shallots, mushrooms, roasted tomatoes and gorgonzola cheese) was also delightful.

If you are looking for a delicious downtown Denver happy hour spot, you should definitely try out Panzano!  (If you have the Eat Denver Dining Deck, which I also highly recommend, you can get $10 off your purchase of $25 or more.)   Panzano is located downtown at 909 17th St. on the corner of 17th St. and Champa St.
