If you love bikes, beer, parades, or just being around happy people in crazy outfits, be sure to put this Saturday’s Tour de Fat on your calendar. The “cycling circus” sponsored by New Belgium Brewery is a raucous and super fun time that begins with a bike parade at 10am. Leaving from the west side City Park, expect to see lots of people in crazy costumes on crazy bikes (double-deckers, tandems, tricked-out cruisers, penny farthings, fixies, etc.) as they ride south to 12th, cruise around the north side of Cheesman Park, head west along 13th Ave., ride north on Lincoln, and return to City Park via 16th Ave. After the bike parade, attendees will enjoy performances by Yo-Yo People, The Cleverly’s, Sssnakenstein, and Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, play quirky lawn games, and consume lots of New Belgium beer.
In keeping with tradition, the event will also culminate with one person trading in their car in exchange for a bicycle. “One person will become the center of the show as he or she gets up on stage, hands over their car keys, and pledges to live one year car-free. Each car-for-bike swapper will choose a local bike shop to help turn a $2,250 budget into an ultimate car-replacement commuter bike. Vehicles for Charity will auction the cars, with proceeds benefiting local cycling organizations.” Proceeds from the 2012 Denver Tour de Fat will benefit Bike Denver and the Denver Cruisers.
